Background | Roman Vail
Roman Vail was born in the former Soviet Union and raised in New York City — a childhood defined by movement, observation, and imagination.
Coming of age in the 90s, he absorbed the era's contradictions: the fading excess of the 80s giving way to grunge, gritty realism, and the rise of the supermodel. That tension between raw and refined, reality and glamour, lives at the heart of every image he makes.
Before photography, Roman studied creative writing, then Media Studies, before finding his way into audio mastering — working with artists and record labels across genres. The discipline, the ear for nuance, the instinct for tone: all of it translated directly into his visual work.
Photography has always been woven into his life — weekend shoots with his father, walls lined with albums and art in two family homes. It was both inheritance and refuge. It still is.
Not a performance. A translation. Roman works with you to find the voice you already have — so the images don't just look like you, they feel like you.
