Roman Vail was born in the former Soviet Union and raised in New York City. He is the founder of Art Official Photos and the originator of editorial tension photography — an approach to fashion and portrait work built on glamour, psychological edge, and the charged moment between subject and lens.
He works across models, PR firms, agencies, and brands — not to chase a look, but to build one, frame by frame. As photographer and retoucher, he owns the full arc: first click to final retouch, so nothing gets lost in translation.

Origin
Coming of age in New York in the 90s, Vail absorbed the era’s contradictions — the fading excess of the 80s giving way to grunge, gritty realism, and the rise of the supermodel. That tension between raw and refined, reality and glamour, lives at the heart of every image he makes.
Before photography, he studied creative writing, then Media Studies, before finding his way into audio mastering — working with artists and record labels across genres. The discipline, the ear for nuance, the instinct for tone: all of it translated directly into his visual work.
Photography has always been woven into his life — weekend shoots with his father, walls lined with albums and art in two family homes. It was both inheritance and refuge. It still is.
Philosophy
